Man. I just learned that Heavy D passed away today. You may be too young to remember the “overweight lover” but he was one of my favorite rappers growing up. I remember hearing his first single “The Overweight Lovers In The House” on the radio back in ’87. I immediately went out and bought the cassette (yes I was around when there were cassettes) and bumped it non-stop.
Heavy wasn’t your typical “large” dude. He rocked Nike’s when at the time everyone was wearing Adidas. He wasn’t afraid to dance at his shows or go outside the hip hop genre to create music. He even showed rappers like Biggie that you can be big and sexy. I had the honor of knowing my favorite childhood rapper. He was not only a great artist but a great guy all around. This one hurts. To quote a Heavy D lyric, “You’re on mind… and I wish you a peacful journey…”
